No Country for Old Men was the winner of the best picture at the 2007 Academy Awards celebration. It is the film adaptation of the novel No Country for Old Menby Cormac McCarthy. The film was by the Coen brothers and stars Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin. No Country for old Men tells the story of a drug deal gone wrong and the concequences that follow. The themes of fate and circumstance are extremly strong within this story.
The Departed a film directed by Martin Scorses and staring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg was the 2006 Best picture winner at the Academy Awards (of that same year). The films tells the story of and Irish Mob boss who discovers a way to have an informant inside the State Police department. However, at the same time, the ploice plant an informant within the mob boss’ crew. Both sides fight to discover the true idenities before the other side.
Crash was the winner for best picture at the 2005 Academy Awards. This drama is the brainchild of co-witter, producer and director Paul Higgis. Crash addresses the issues of social tension within an urban, multicultural city. The movie is heart-breaking and inspiring all at the same time. Crash tells the story of a variety of characters coming from different social and economic backgrounds and how their lives are defined by those background.
Million Dollar Baby won best picture at the 2004 Academy Awards. The film was directed and co-produced by Clint Eastwood. Eastwood also stared in Million Dollar Baby along side Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman. Paul Haggis wrote the screenplay and based it on a collection of short stories that were called Rope Burns: Stories From the Corner, but has since been republiched and re-titled Million Dollar Baby: Stories from the Corner
by F.X. Toole. The Movie Million Dollar Baby tells the story of a boxing trainer, still trying to prove his worth dispite his obscure past. He looks for validation while training a female boxer. Although an underdog at the beginning she fights her way through many obstacles to try and attain her dream of becoming a professional boxer.
